Background:
Andrei was the only child of the fourth Count Vannacutt, born to a pureblooded magical family in the cold mountains of Bulgaria. He was raised in the strictest of conditions, as the heir to the family fortune as well as the only one to bear on their noble lineage. He excelled in school, was a Quidditch star while at Durmstrang (as befits the grandson of Dimitri Desmund, Bulgaria National Quidditch Team chaser) and began a shining career as soon as he left the school.
However, during his Grand World Tour, he met a charming Scottish woman - Fiona Macduff. They fell in love, embarked on a stormy affair and soon he was back at the front door of Vannacutt Hall, escorting his pregnant wife.
His parents were against the marriage and they tried as best as they could to persuade their son to leave the muggle commoner. But Andrei threatened to leave the family, leave the lineage and to deny his title and allow the Vannacutt line to drop out of the aristocracy entirely. So the Vannacutts tolerated having Fiona in their home, but they made no secret of their disdain for her.
When she died giving birth to their son - Nikolai Vannacutt - Andrei moved out of the Vannacutt Hall to live in England where he would then set up the company that would make him richer than his parents combined. However... he left his son in the care of his grandparents, unable to bear looking into the face of the boy... the son his wife had died for.
His parents died not long after of old age, but still he remained away from Bulgaria. Allowing his son to grow up in the company of servants and neighbours. He returned home every few months, long enough to check that the boy was growing just fine, that he had magical talent and that he was learning his lessons. Otherwise, he tried not to look at his son because he still bore the hurt of losing his wife.
In his 37th year of life, however, he suddenly realised what a wrongful deed he had done and summoned his then thirteen year old son to join him in England. Nikolai, as was expected, was bitter and resented Andrei for all that he had done (or rather, not done) but he came grudgingly and attended Hogwarts.
His attempt to mend ties with his son was stilted, but when he received advise from Professor Andi Mao-MacDougal Zizhen, who taught Charms at Hogwarts at the time and was Nikolai's favourite teacher, he seemed to make some progress with his son.
What he didn't intend to do was fall in love with the sharp and often grouchy woman.
They married not long after and returned to Bulgaria, to begin their lives anew in Vannacutt Hall... and Nikolai followed. Now, ten years later, Andrei is still trying to get his son to forgive him... unfortunately, his firstborn inherited his own stubborn nature.
