Background: He was a Gryffindor in Hogwarts, and was interested in magical creatures ever since he was a child. MacTavish comes from a family of average status. He's born to a muggleborn wizard and a witch who were both Gryffindors during their time at Hogwarts too.
The reason he decided to work for the Ministry was because of his passion for magical creatures, and also because he thought that a lot of them received unfair treatment from the humans. He wanted to change that, and also hopefully one day write a book on the many different creatures so that witches and wizards in the future will understand just how precious these living things are.
